Brother Dave Gardner
  *

Dave Gardner, talking a smooth Southern-hip-universalist line, is about as think-y as they get. Or, to put it another way, he is stimulating, relevant, pointed-all the things that true wit has always been. Gardner is more succinct about it. He flashes a huge smile, opens his big blue eyes, looks at you with this impossibly innocent face, and says, "I stir up snakes.

I was raised on this man’s philosophy! My dad changed my future by raising my brother and I on Brother Dave Gardner’s albums. What a classic man...what incredible insight and grasp to the BIG picture. Sad how many folks don’t get it out there in the real world. I’m pretty sure they didn’t grow up learning the best frame of mind possible thru the words of Brother Dave and the laughter with our dad while listening. Awesome.

I have been searching for days for a comedy skit from the 60s about Junior and Miss Baby on a motorcycle. My sister and I want to get the album for our brother for christmas. We listened to it endlessly as children but I can’t remember the name of the comedian or the album. We can almost quote the skit from beginning to end but nothing else. Does anyone know if Brother Dave may have done a skit with Junior, Miss Baby, a motorcycle ride and a leather jacket in it? It was an LP. Any help is great.

I first heard Brother Dave in 1963. My older brother had just returned from Germany and had them all on a reel to reel tape recorder. I wasn’t supposed to touch his stuff, but at 12 years old, his tape recorder was just too tempting. I would play Brother Dave for my friends and we would laugh our heads off. We commited all the routines to memory and used every chance we had to spout a line or two. If only we put that much effort into school work.....Little David, Miss Baby, Hail Cesar, all of them were priceless. How many times have you answered or at least thought about answering the question "What are you looking for?" with the phrase "Little bitty women." No profanity, no extreme sexual inuendo, just pure talent and a keen eye for observing the human condition.

Hair, teeth and eyballs........ ....and a tattoo on his arm that said, "Mammy you’re the most". If you’re not John, I’m gone. Kicked up the kick-down stand. Redgstur...Register... Still sounds right. Holding onto his latisimers.... ....Pass it on to the waitress. If we was moral, we’de all be nude. ....lon-n-ng spoons tied to their hands. I’d smoke chains if I could light them. Them other cats is still looking for it. Tax the poor folks....... What would a preacher spend it on? Smooth, flat, slick river rock. ...stewed tomato sandwiches on light bread. It amazes me how much of his stories I committed to memory along about 1960. We boys at Georgia Military College would repeat these phrases to one another and roll on the floor laughing, as if we had listened to the whole story again. It was a lot like the joke of the convicts who had heard their jokes so often that they only shouted out the numbers. Brother Dave captured our hearts. In 1982 or 1983, just before his death, he came to Jacksonville florida and I took my wife to listen to him. The subject matter had changed but he retained his same delivery. It was a special evening because it allows her to understand the off-the-wall quotes I spout on occasion. It’s not that I even care that anyone hears me. I have to let myself know that I’ve matched the situation with Brother Dave philosophy. Somewhere in the house lies all of his records. They are worn and scratched almost beyond comprehension and the covers are tattered and torn. I don’t need them though. I’ve got his every word in my head. Tom Cadenhead

I saw Bro. Dave at Winthrop College i 1962. I remember several people getting offended at some comment and leaving, but it was a great show. Dave played the drums-very well too! I have several of his albums, and it is a joy to listen to him now and again.

My dad turned me on to Brother Dave. In fact, I had the opportunity to see Bro. Dave live in Hobbs, New Mexico in the mid 60’s. When my dad died, I was lucky enough to get all of his record albums, including ALL of his Bro. Dave albums. He was an outstanding talent.

Brother Dave’s words (messages) stay with you for a lifetime. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used his line, "NO, NOT YET" when someone asks me if I’ve lived here all my life. How could you forget the simplicity of " Hey, Brother Dave, say where the best place to be when the BOMB drops? Say it don’t make no difference. Jes as long as you can say, (in a whisper)WHAT WAS THAT? I could go on, but those of you that are here know what I’m speaking of. Dave Gardner was a comedian sure, but he was also a poet and philosopher. He should be remembered for those qualities as well as his ability to put a smile on your face. His talent is missed.

I bought the first 4 albums as they were released. Loaned them to a so called friend in 1971 and have not seen him or my albums since. I spoke to his wife from his hospital room in 1983, don’t know the day but he was in The Smyrna Hospital, Smyrna, GA. It was announced by WSB-TV in Atlanta that he passed that evening. How did they come up with the idea he died in Myrtle Beach? Check it out.

I have heard of Brother Dave Gardner, through my husband, and my father in law, before he was gone. My Father In Law, who had every single one of Brother Dave’s albums, left them all to my husband, over 20 years ago when we first married. Unfortunately, before I was able to hear any of them, tradgedy struck, and they are now gone. I still hear today what a great comedian he was. Could you please make some of Brother Daves tracks available for me to hear on LAUGH.Com, so I can hear them, and also play them for my husband to surprise him? Thanks so much if you would!!!!!

I saw David Anthony Wright’s show "Rejoice Dear Hearts: An Evening with Brother Dave Gardner" last night at the Paramount Theatre in Burlington, NC. David has the style and mannerisms of Brother Dave all the way. David’s approach was to mix Brother Dave in the first person describing his life and to be Brother Dave on stage doing the routines. "Glory!" What a show! If Brother David takes Brother Dave on the road, you must see it. This has been an unpaid testimonial from an old high school and college buddy of David A. Wright.

I have just recently been introduced to brother dave by one of his relatives. When his albums were played for me I realized that I had heard him before and still do in many of todays top comics. The one thing, whether then the fact that brother dave was the first comedian to push the bounds of social acceptability, that sets him apart in my mind is the fact that while listening to him I hear deep spiritual princables that people were frieghtened to discuss for decades after. I feel priveleged to have been introduced to the work of brother dave gardner.
